Cycling from Hilversum, in to the polder, the first thing you see is the difference, between old and new land, the area around where I live is well known for its heather and woodlands, its all small-scale compared with what you see the moment you cross the bridge in to the new land, big parcels of land and long straight roads.

Kampen one of Holland's oldest city's, with came to be well known in the golden ages, and of that era, is lucky for us is still much to see, is where I come back on old soil, I walk trough the town for a bit, looking at beautiful houses along the river Ijsel.

Further to Meppel, in the province of Drente, with is well known for its beautiful cycling routes, and the so called Dolmens, where I will spent the night in the youth hostel, I ride trough one of the biggest wetlands of Europe, Meppel is an nice starting point to see this beautiful area of Holland , for me it was going back in time , in the early sixties, I stayed in this same hostel, while being on my first bicycle trip that I made alone. A lot has changed since then , we had to do all kind of chores, like peeling potato's , but one thing did not change , meeting people from all over the world , in the garden I meet two German girls making there own meal, and I share an room with Dutch, Canadian, and Australian travelers , that night we watch the soccer game on TV and drink an beer or two while talking about our travels.

The next day will take me to the place Scheemda, again trough two different kinds of landscape , both of them full with small picturesque villages, like Ruinen and Beilen, where in between lies the Dwingeloose heide , an real nice Moor where it is good cycling and hiking. After this I come in an area, what used to be famous for its straw-cardboard industry , and further back in time it was peat country, and that is why you see so many villages build in ribbon like style, along those many straight canals , like Stadskanaal and places like Pekela who come in old and new. I made an link to Oude Pekela there is a lot to see, and read from the old way off living , and of course how it is now. I stay away from the main roads, and come through places ,that I never even heard of, and so ends a day, in with I saw an part of Holland that was new to me. I reach the next Y-hostel , this one even more modern than last night. After an shower and an good meal, I walked around some , but for the peace and quiet there is not much to see , so I decide to have a couple of beers and retire early , if I'm lucky I have this room of four all to my self. I go to the reception to call home , when I walk back trough an large auditorium there is life music , some folks celebrating there 12.5 years wedding anniversary, so I sit down again with an other beer , the music is good, as is the whole atmosphere , I get to know the people at my table , an elderly German couple I hoped that they where from the north , but no they came from Essen , from where they made an cycle tour trough Holland and are on there way back home , they did tell me that for the next night I be better of staying in Greetsiel rather than in Nordeich as I had planned , it seems to be a lot nicer there. So that was an surprising evening of to bed.

Next day , up way to early 06:00, and breakfast is not until 08:00 , so I pack up my bike walk around a bit and end up being the first at the table, wetter looks good. After 20km I'm in Nieuweschans, where I will cross the border in to Germany after an short coffee break, on the way here, I past some  nice old farms, from the days that they where big and the area lived from agriculture, some of them look like castles.
